Network FAQ

What is the purpose of the network?

1

Ginger Root Network is a benevolence group supporting the material needs of our community and fortifying independent institutions made for us by us. This network exists to:

  • ○ Encourage the Kwanzaa principles ujima (collective work and responsibility) & kujichagulia (self-determination) year round

  • ○ Raise awareness of people and organizations in need of urgent and sustained monetary support

  • ○ Provide beneficiary updates to demonstrate progress

The newsletter functions as a visible ledger that brings awareness to various causes and organizations in need of monetary support and to encourage recurring donations. Instead of ad hoc giving primarily driven by moments of crisis, we want to share opportunities for giving of various kinds. Featured organizations are categorized as follows:

  • ○ Mutual Aids (e.g., food pantries, child care, housing, universal income programs)

  • ○ Independent Organization & Institutions (e.g., archives, media/publishing, freedom schools)

  • ○ Short-Term Support (e.g., building repairs)

  • ○ Emergencies (e.g., natural disasters, power outages, survivors of mass violence)

Due to the heightened concerns around journalistic integrity amidst media consolidations and outrage-driven social media algorithms, we hope that shifting attention from awareness to collective action will feel empowering and alleviate any sense of overwhelm and helplessness.
